Airport Fly-In On June 11

Local supporters who are championing upgrades to the Lee County Airport will host a Fly-In on Saturday, June 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Live music and food trucks along with an array of planes from around the region will allow for a festival atmosphere with the organizers looking to expand services at the airport. The installation of a 10,000 gallon tank for Jet-A fuel is in the works thanks to previous efforts by the supporters with grant funding from USDA and the Virginia Department of Aviation acquired over the past months. Jet-A fuel is required for turbine-powered aircraft such as air ambulance helicopters which service the county and currently are based in Kentucky. Corporate jet planes would be another boost for the local economy with the airport having a 5,000 foot runway. At a fly-in held in July 2021, several people spoke about the economic benefits that the airport can provide. The Board of Supervisors approved a 10 cent per gallon reduction in fuel cost for the June 11 fly-in and a second one that is being planned for October 1 which could include a car show.
